Deciding who you allow to transport your child shouldn’t be a quick decision. Before you entrust your child to a transport company you need to do some research on who will be driving your child, what qualifications they have and how they are monitored.

Anyone can drive a car but not everyone is adequately trained to transport your child safely. Before making your decision ask the following questions.

1. How do you screen your drivers? What experience do they have? How are they trained, if at all? Is having a driver’s license enough of a reason to allow someone you don’t really know to transport your child. It is so important to find out a little more about the person who will be alone in the car with your child.
2. How do you monitor your driver’s adherence to basic laws? This is an important issue because it means your child’s driver is accountable to someone.
3. What is your operator’s license number?
4. Tell me about your vehicles – are they bought new? What checks are done daily?
5. What is your procedure in the event of a breakdown? This may not seem important but it really is. Does the company your child is transported with have a back-up plan should something go wrong with the vehicle or will your child be stranded on the side of the road?
6. What is your procedure in the event you cannot locate my child at their collection point?
7. How many accidents involving injuries, have you had during your operation?
8. What happens if my allocated driver is sick?
9. What coverage do you have in the event of an accident?
10. Are younger children transported in car seats? Are the older children required to wear safety belts?

Your children are your most precious possession; you owe it to them to make sure that the person who transports them is well trained and capable of dealing with any emergency they may be faced with. Remembering that driving a child is SO much more than just driving – ensure anyone who transports your children is well trained not just at driving, but also at caring for children.

All of these questions are extremely important and you have every right to ask them of whoever you decide to allow transport your child.
